पञ्चकं ना स्मरेन्नित्यं महापातकनाशनम् ॥
अहल्या, द्रौपदी, सीता, तारा, और मंदोदरी, इन पाँचों के नित्य स्मरण से (गुण और जीवन स्मरण से) महापातक का नाश होता है।
पंचकन्या 1 : अहिल्या पद्मपुराण में वर्णित एक कथा के अनुसार देवराज इन्द्र स्वर्गलोक में अप्सराओं से घिरे रहने के बाद भी कामवासना से घिरे रहते थे। एक दिन वो धरती पर विचरण कर रहे थे। तभी उन्होंने देखा कि एक कुटिया के बाहर गौतम ऋषि की पत्नी देवी अहिल्या दैनिक कार्यों में व्यस्त हैं। अहिल्या इतनी सुंदर और रूपवती थी कि इन्द्र उन्हें देखकर मोहित हो गए।
इस तरह इन्द्र रोजाना देवी अहिल्या को देखने के लिए कुटिया के बाहर आने लगे। धीरे-धीरे उन्हें गौतम ऋषि की दिनचर्या के बारे में पता चलने लगा। इन्द्र को अहिल्या के रूप को पाने की एक युक्ति सूझी। उन्होंने सुबह गौतम ऋषि के वेश में आकर अहिल्या के साथ कामक्रीडा करने की योजना बनाई क्योंकि सूर्य उदय होने से पूर्व ही गौतम ऋषि नदी में स्नान करने के लिए चले जाते थे।
इसके बाद करीब 2-3 घंटे बाद पूजा करने के बाद आते थे। इन्द्र आधी रात से ही कुटिया के बाहर छिपकर ऋषि के जाने की प्रतीक्षा करने लगे। इस दौरान इन्द्र की कामेच्छा उनपर इतनी हावी हो गई कि उन्हें एक और योजना सूझी। उन्होंने अपनी माया से ऐसा वातावरण बनाया जिसे देखकर ऐसा प्रतीत होता था कि सुबह हो गई हो। ये देखकर गौतम ऋषि कुटिया से बाहर चले गए। उनके जाने के कुछ समय बाद इन्द्र ने गौतम ऋषि का वेश बनाकर कुटिया में प्रवेश किया। उन्होंने आते ही कहा अहिल्या से प्रणय निवेदन किया.।
अपने पति द्वारा इस तरह के विचित्र व्यवहार को देखकर पहले तो देवी अहिल्या को शंका हुई लेकिन इन्द्र के छल-कपट से सराबोर मीठी बातों को सुनकर अहिल्या भी अपने पति के स्नेह में सबकुछ भूल बैठी। दूसरी तरफ नदी के पास जाने पर गौतम ऋषि ने आसपास का वातावरण देखा जिससे उन्हें अनुभव हुआ कि अभी भोर नहीं हुई है। वो किसी अनहोनी की कल्पना करके अपने घर पहुंचे। वहां जाकर उन्होंने देखा कि उनके वेश में कोई दूसरा पुरुष उनकी पत्नी के साथ रति क्रियाएं कर रहा है।
ये देखते ही वो क्रोध से व्याकुल हो उठे। वहीं दूसरी ओर उनकी पत्नी ने जब अपने पति को अपने सामने खड़ा पाया तो उन्हें सारी बात समझ में आने लगी। अंजाने में किए गए अपराध को सोचकर उनका चेहरा पीला पड़ गया। इन्द्र भी भयभीत हो गए। क्रोध से भरकर गौतम ऋषि ने इन्द्र से कहा ‘मूर्ख, तूने मेरी पत्नी का स्त्रीत्व भंग किया है। उसकी योनि को पाने की इच्छा मात्र के लिए तूने इतना बड़ा अपराध कर दिया। यदि तुझे स्त्री योनि को पाने की इतनी ही लालसा है तो मैं तुझे श्राप देता हूं कि अभी इसी समय तेरे पूरे शरीर पर हजार योनियां उत्पन्न हो जाएगी’।
कुछ ही पलों में श्राप का प्रभाव इन्द्र के शरीर पर पड़ने लगा और उनके पूरे शरीर पर स्त्री योनियां निकल आई। ये देखकर इन्द्र आत्मग्लानिता से भर उठे। उन्होंने हाथ जोड़कर गौतम ऋषि से श्राप मुक्ति की प्रार्थना की। ऋषि ने इन्द्र पर दया करते हुए हजार योनियों को हजार आंखों में बदल दिया। वहीं दूसरी ओर अपनी पत्नी को शिला में बदल दिया। बाद में प्रभु श्रीराम ने उनका पैरों से स्पर्श कर उद्धार किया।
इन्द्र को ‘देवराज’ की उपाधि देने के साथ ही उन्हें देवताओं का राजा भी माना जाता है लेकिन उनकी पूजा एक भगवान के तौर पर नहीं की जाती। इन्द्र द्वारा ऐसे ही अपराधों के कारण उन्हें दूसरे देवताओं की तुलना में ज्यादा आदर- सत्कार नहीं दिया जाता।
पंचकन्या 2 : तारा किष्किंधा की महारानी और बाली की पत्नी तारा का पंचकन्याओं में दूसरा स्थान है। कुछ ग्रंथों के अनुसार तारा, बृहस्पति की पौत्री थीं तो कुछ के अनुसार समुद्र मंथन के समय निकली मणियों में से एक मणि तारा थी। तारा इतनी खूबसूरत थी कि देवता और असुर सभी उनसे विवाह करना चाहते थे।
बाली की पत्नी :बाली और सुषेण, मंथन में देवताओं के सहायक के तौर पर मौजूद थे। जब तारा क्षीर सागर से निकली तब दोनों ने ही उनसे विवाह करने की इच्छा प्रकट की। बाली, तारा के दाहिनी तरफ खड़ा था और सुषेण उनकी बाईं ओर। तब विष्णु ने इस समस्या का हल किया कि जो व्यक्ति कन्या की दाहिनी ओर खड़ा होता है वह उसका पति और बाईं ओर खड़ा होने वाला उसका पिता होता है। ऐसे में बालि को तारा का पति घोषित किया गया।
सुग्रीव के साथ युद्ध :असुरों के साथ युद्ध के दौरान बाली की मृत्यु को प्राप्त जैसी अफवाह उड़ने पर सुग्रीव ने बाली की पत्नी के साथ विवाह कर खुद को किष्किंधा का सम्राट घोषित कर दिया। लेकिन जब बाली वापस आया तब उसने अपने भाई से राज्य और अपनी पत्नी को हासिल करने के लिए आक्रमण कर दिया।
बाली ने सुग्रीव को अपने राज्य से बाहर कर दिया और साथ ही उसकी प्रिय पत्नी रुमा को अपने पास ही रखा। जब सुग्रीव को राम का साथ प्राप्त हुआ तब उसने वापस आकर फिर बाली को युद्ध के लिए ललकारा।
तारा का सुझाव :तारा समझ गई कि सुग्रीव के पास अकेले बाली का सामना करने की ताकत नहीं है इसलिए हो ना हो उसे राम का समर्थन प्राप्त हुआ है। उसने बाली को समझाने की कोशिश भी की लेकिन बाली ने समझा कि सुग्रीव को बचाने के लिए तारा उसका पक्ष ले रही है। बाली ने तारा का त्याग कर दिया और सुग्रीव से युद्ध करने चला गया।
बाली का कथन :जब राम की सहायता से सुग्रीव ने बाली का वध किया तो मृत्यु शैया पर रहते हुए बाली ने अपने भाई सुग्रीव से कहा कि वे हर मामले में तारा का सुझाव अवश्य लें, तारा के परामर्श के बिना कोई भी कदम उठाना भारी पड़ सकता है।
पंचकन्या 3 : मंदोदरी तीसरा नाम है असुर सम्राट रावण की पत्नी मंदोदरी का, जिसने रावण की हर बुरे कदम पर खेद प्रकट किया और उसे हर बुरा काम करने से रोका। हिन्दू पौराणिक ग्रंथों में मंदोदरी को एक ऐसी स्त्री के रूप में दर्शाया गया है जो हमेशा सत्य के मार्ग पर चली। मंदोदरी, असुर राजा मयासुर और हेमा नामक अप्सरा की पुत्री थी। मंदोदरी की सुंदरता पर मुग्ध होकर रावण ने उससे विवाह किया था।
पंच कन्याओं में से एक मंदोदरी को चिर कुमारी के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। मंदोदरी अपने पति द्वारा किए गए बुरे कार्यों से अच्छी तरह वाकिफ थी, वह हमेशा रावण को यही सलाह देती थी कि बुराई के मार्ग को त्याग कर सत्य की शरण में आ जाए, लेकिन अपनी ताकत पर गुमान करने वाले रावण ने कभी मंदोदरी की बात को गंभीरता से नहीं लिया।
रावण की मृत्यु के पश्चात, भगवान राम के कहने पर विभीषण ने मंदोदरी से विवाह किया था।
पंचकन्या 4 : कुंती रामायण काल के बाद चौथा नाम आता है कुंती का। हस्तिनापुर के राजा पांडु की पत्नी और तीन ज्येष्ठ पांडवों की माता, कुंती को ऋषि दुर्वासा ने एक ऐसा मंत्र दिया था, जिसके अनुसार वह जिस भी देवता का ध्यान कर उस मंत्र का जाप करेंगी, वह देवता उन्हें पुत्र रत्न प्रदान करेगा।
मंत्र का प्रभाव : कुंती को इस मंत्र के प्रभावों को जानना था इसलिए एक दिन उन्होंने भगवान सूर्य का ध्यान कर उस मंत्र का जाप आरंभ किया। सूर्य देव ने प्रकट हुए और उन्हें एक पुत्र प्रदान किया। वह पुत्र कर्ण था, लेकिन उस समय कुंती अविवाहित थी इसलिए उन्हें कर्ण का त्याग करना पड़ा।
स्वयंवर में कुंती और पांडु का विवाह हुआ। पांडु को एक ऋषि द्वारा यह श्राप मिला हुआ था कि जब भी वह किसी स्त्री का स्पर्श करेगा, उसकी मृत्यु हो जाएगी। पांडु की मृत्यु के पश्चात कुंती ने धर्म देव को याद कर उनसे युधिष्ठिर, वायु देव से भीम और इन्द्र देव से अर्जुन को प्राप्त किया।
माद्री की प्रार्थना : पांडु की दूसरी पत्नी माद्री ने कुंती से इस मंत्र का जाप कर पुत्र प्राप्त करने की अनुमति मांगी, जिसे कुंती ने स्वीकार कर लिया। अश्विनी कुमार को याद कर माद्री ने उनसे नकुल और सहदेव को प्राप्त किया।
पंच कन्या 5 : द्रौपदी महाभारत की नायिका द्रौपदी भी पंच कन्याओं में से एक हैं। पांच पतियों की पत्नी बनने वाली द्रौपदी का व्यक्तित्व काफी मजबूत था। स्वयंवर के दौरान अर्जुन को अपना पति स्वीकार करने वाली द्रौपदी को कुंती के कहने पर पांचों भाइयों की पत्नी बनकर रहना पड़ा।
काली का अवतार : - द्रौपदी को वेद व्यास ने यह वरदान दिया था कि पांचों भाइयों की पत्नी होने के बाद भी उसका कौमार्य कायम रहेगा। प्रत्येक पांडव से द्रौपदी को एक-एक पुत्र रत्न की प्राप्ति हुई। चौपड़ के खेल में हारने के बाद जब पांडवों को अज्ञातवास और वनवास की सजा हुई, तब द्रौपदी ने भी उनके साथ सजा का पालन किया। कुरुक्षेत्र के युद्ध में अपने पुत्र, पिता और भाई को खोने वाली द्रौपदी को कुछ ग्रंथों में मां काली तो कुछ में धन की देवी लक्ष्मी का अवतार भी कहा जाता है।

On the other hand, Gautam Rishi, on approaching the river, saw the surrounding environment, which made him feel that it is not yet dawn. He arrived at his house after imagining something untoward. Going there, he saw that another man in his disguise was performing rituals with his wife.
On seeing this, he got distraught with anger. On the other hand, when his wife found her husband standing in front of him, he started to understand the whole thing. Thinking of the crime committed, he had a pale face. Indra also got frightened. Filled with anger, the sage Gautam said to Indra, "Fool, you have disturbed the femininity of my wife. You committed such a big crime just for want of getting her vagina. If you have such a longing to get a woman's vagina, then I curse you that right now a thousand vagrants will be born on your whole body '.
